Artisan, educator, and globally recognized leader in the field of plant-based cheesemaking, our founder, Karen, has extensive experience as a chef in addition to a concrete academic background in political science and biology. Karen began her journey in plant-based cheesemaking at her post as executive chef at Vancouver-based vegan restaurant Graze. It’s there she began experimenting and learning—applying her science and research-based approach to developing a plant-based cheese for the restaurant. She recognized that to gain a better understanding of the process she needed to understand it in the context of a scientific equation. Taking the time to work through and perfect each recipe methodically, she continued to develop her plant-based cheeses. Her impact has grown organically from an exploration in plant-based cheesemaking at Graze to Blue Heron, a beloved brand with select skus available across Western Canada, and selective direct to consumer nationwide. Karen shares her current and evolving collected knowledge in her book, “The Art of Plant-based Cheese Making,” now in its second edition.

Blue Heron is built on a reverence for all sentient beings, a respect for the Earth, which gives us life, and a methodical and ever-evolving approach to plant-based cheesemaking. Karen’s compassion for sentient beings has always been foundational to her approach to food. Her plant-based cheeses are 100% dairy-free, made without the use of animal products. As we continue to grow we are working to uphold and build upon the same set of values and standards that Karen has established.

Surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the coastal rainforest, Blue Heron was born on the west coast of BC. We are grateful to live and produce our plant-based cheeses in a place where a walk on the beach provides us with endless sources of inspiration. Our immersion in this coastal community has influenced our approach.


Steady and focused, we are deeply inspired by the calm presence of the great blue herons that inhabit our shared coast line. Rarely found far from water, blue herons are often observed standing on the shoreline patiently watching for movement under the ocean's surface. They move slowly through the water, each graceful step taken with intention, living in harmony with the ecosystems they inhabit. At Blue Heron, we seek to bring the same mindful intention to our cultured vegan cheeses and dairy alternative products.

We are constantly working to find ways to support the communities we live in and intersect with through our supply chain. Our ingredients are sourced from carefully selected farmers who share our same high standards for environmental and social practices. We work closely with our partners to ensure that this process is beneficial for all. All of our ingredients are plant-based, grown from the earth, and harvested sustainably.
